Global nature of dilute-to-dense transition of granular flows in a 2D channel.

چکیده
The dilute-to-dense transition of granular flow of particle size d(0) is studied experimentally in a two-dimensional channel (width D) with confined exit (width d). Our results show that with fixed d and D there is a maximum inflow rate Q(c) above which the flow changes from dilute to dense and the outflow rate drops abruptly from Q(c) to a dense rate Q(d). A rescaled critical rate q(c) is found to be a function of a scaling variable lambda only: q(c) approximately F(lambda), where lambda identical with d/d(0) d/D-d. This form of lambda suggests that the dilute-to-dense transition is a global property of the flow, unlike the jamming transition which depends only on d/d(0). Furthermore, the transition is found to occur when the area fraction of particles near the exit exceeds a critical value which is close to 0.65+/-0.03.

Rapid granular flows on a rough incline: phase diagram, gas transition, and effects of air drag.
We report experiments on the overall phase diagram of granular flows on an incline with emphasis on high inclination angles where the mean layer velocity approaches the terminal velocity of a single particle free falling in air. The granular flow was characterized by measurements of the surface velocity, the average layer height, and the mean density of the layer as functions of the hopper open...
متن کاملGranular Hydrodynamics and Pattern Formation in Vertically Oscillated Granular Disks Layers
A numerical hydrodynamic model of a vibrated granular bed in 2D is elaborated based on a highly accurate Shock Capturing scheme applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for granular flow. The hydrodynamic simulation of granular flows is numerically difficult, particularly in systems where dilute and dense regions occur at the same time and interact with each other. As an example of s...
متن کاملEffects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory
This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...
متن کاملArchitecture in Transition Era toward Network Society
Technology affected human life in many ways in different eras of mankind history. Today, the information and telecommunication technology has revolutionized basic structures of human life. Changes are from the whole to the parts and vice versa, which include family and society too. Family lost its former structure in the information age and differentiated from patriarchy family. Societies have ...
